How do I estimate my 2500m or 5000m finish time?

1/23/2014

One thing I've noticed since we started doing the S5000 Challenge is that first time participants tend to overestimate how long it will take them to complete the event – my self included!  I crushed my target time by 10% when I swam the S5000 Challenge for the first time.

Typical marathon runners do not train by continuously running marathons in the months leading up to the event – and neither should a swimmer.  Most Masters swimmers and triathletes are already swimming about 60% of their target distance in a workout.  And you probably have a lot more to give a the end the workout, right?  Don't underestimate your abilities!  Use your Critical Swim Speed (CSS) to estimate your finish time (Newsome, 2011):

Step 1:  Calculate your CSS using using 200m and 400m timetrial results. Online calculators can be found here and here.

Step 2:  Convert your CSS pace into an S5000 Challenge finish time:
  • 2500m finish time = (CSS Pace + 2 seconds) x 25
  • 5000m finish time = (CSS Pace + 4 seconds) x 50
